Welcome to this FREE tutorial with Michael Miller Fabrics 2022 Blog Hop!!!
For this tutorial, I used the Most Wonderful Time of the Year Collection by Jane Dixon for Michael Miller Fabrics.
I love all fabrics, and this collection got my heart a bit deeper because although it’s a holiday-themed collection, I can still use the quilt the entire year since it has general winter prints and several pretty colors, not only the traditional red and green that we’re so used to seeing everywhere.
See below the prints I chose to work with for our Winter Quilt Tutorial.
I absolutely love the winter vibes of the prints and yet, I can still have the holiday feelings of it.
Let’s start cutting and making the coziest quilt of the season!
Fabric requirements and cutting instructions:
c1) striped blue: 1yd; Cut (4) 7 1/2″ x WOF; sub-cut (16) 7 1/2″ squares.
c2) snowflakes gray background: 2/3yd; Cut (3) 7″ x WOF; sub-cut (16) 7″ squares.
c3) white background sweater people: 1/3yd; Cut (2) 5″ x WOF; sub-cut (16) 5″ squares.
c4) blue background sweater people: 2/3yd; Cut (2) 10″ x WOF; sub-cut (8) 10″ squares.
c5) snowflakes white and blueish background: 1yd; Cut (3) 11 1/2″ x WOF; sub-cut (8) 11 1/2″ squares.
Backing fabric: 4yd.
Binding fabric: 1/2yd; Cut (6) 2 1/2″ x WOF; Sew the strips together using 90-degree angle, press in half on the longer edge, and set it aside.
Batting: 64″ x 64″.
Block preparation:
- Cut all c2 and c5 squares diagonally twice. You will have 4 triangles for each square.
Block construction:
- To make the economy block, first sew (1) triangle on its longer edge on two perpendicular sides of each square as follows:
*c2 triangles sew on c3 squares.
*c5 triangles sew on c4 squares.
Press towards the triangle’s tips.
2. Sew the two other triangles on the two other perpendicular sides. Press towards the triangle’s tips.
3. The small and the big economy block is done in the same way. Trim the small ones to 7 1/2″ square and trim the large ones to 14 1/2″ square.
The large economy block we will call Block 1.
To make Block 2, we’ll sew (2) different groups of four-patch blocks. This is because we’re using directional fabrics.
First, sew one small economy block on the right side of a c1 square AND one c1 square on the right side of one small economy black to form a four-patch block, make (4) blocks.
Then, do the opposite, sew one c1 square on the right side of one small economy block and sew one small economy block on the right side of a c1; make (4) blocks.
You can definitely sew (8) pairs of c1 on the right side of the economy block and (8) pairs of the economy block on the right side of c1 and rearrange the sections when making each of the two sets of Block 2. I chose to divide the sections previously to make it easier for beginners.
If you’re not working with directional fabrics, you can sew all two-square sections in the same way, with the economy block on the right side of the c1 square, and then when sewing the four-patch block, just rotate the bottom section.
Press the seams open for the four-patch block.
Make 8 of each block 1 and block 2 (remember that block 2 is divided into two arrangements). All blocks should measure 14 1/2″ squares unfinished.
Sew the quilt top following the layout below.
Press all seams open, baste, quilt, and bind using your method of preference.
Enjoy and stay warm.
Happy Winter prep!!!
