Make the best of your scrap fabric bin with this project!!!
It’s still Summer and I decided to make a fun tutorial to create extra Summer feelings. Let’s spread some colorful coasters around the house, or add a beautiful accent to a party decoration.
It’s hot outside and this Summer has been totally indoors for me, so I’ve been creating colorful things for my home. Why not make new coasters? Let’s cool down by the sewing machine, enjoy some AC with a nice drink and make sunflower shaped coasters to use, decorate, gift and spread Summer vibes everywhere!
Let’s get started!
Scrap fun!
This project is perfect for using scrap fabrics, you’ll need 4 pieces of fabric to make the two sides of the circle center and the two sides of the flower shape.
Scrap batting or interfacing is also recommended.
Print out the template HERE, from https://www.firstpalette.com/printable/sun.html
Cut out the shapes and check the scrap pieces you have that will fit the project.
Materials needed for the sunflower coaster:
*(2) 9in x 9in fabric (background/flower) – 1 FQ
*(2) 6in x 6in fabric (center/circle) – 1 FQ
*(1) 10in x 10in batting
*(1) 6in x 6in lightweight stabilizer
*Sewing pins, scissors, sewing machine and general sewing notions.
Tracing and sewing
Trace the templates on the back of one piece of each circle and flower corresponding fabrics.
Trace the flower petals shape on the larger piece of fabric, and lay both fabrics right sides together on top of the batting piece.
Trace the circle on the smaller piece of fabric and lay both fabrics right side together on top of the lightweight interfacing.
Secure parts with pins.
Sew across the traced shapes. I suggest reinforcing the flower shape by sewing across twice, so when we turn right side out it won’t risk poking the seams open.
Cut out along the shapes leaving 1/8in edge. For the circle, use pinking shears or make small clips before the seam to ensure a smooth edge when turned.
For the flower piece, clip the pivot corners close to the seam but be careful not to cut through the seam.
Cut the tips horizontally to ensure smooth points when the project is turned.
To turn the pieces right side out, pull one of the fabric sides of the flower part (don’t cut through the batting) and cut an X shape on the center, and for the circle, repeat the same process.
Poke all corners out, smooth the edges, and press.
Place the circle with the opening facing down on top of the opening part of the flower shape, so both openings will be invisible. Sew a swirl shape to secure the entire circle on the flower.
Sew along the edges of the flower using 1/8in seam allowance to finish.
And you’re done!!! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!!
