In this third tutorial, let’s make a multicolor wedge by strip piecing.
Materials:
For this plate use scrap fabrics from jelly roll strips, scrap pieces from fat eights, and fat quarters.
*Color 1/2/3/4: (2) 2″ x 20″ for each color
You can play with how many colors you want to use, so if you want to make it a 2-color block, use (4) 2″ x 20″ from each Color 1 and Color 2.
*the LARGE Dresden wedge template
*optionally, the circle template is in the same PDF file above.
Using a 1/4in seam allowance sew (2) identical sets of C1+C2+C3+C4 strips as in the picture above. Press seams open.
Cut the template exactly as shown on TUTORIAL 1.
From set 1, cut (7) wedges and from set 2, cut (5) wedges for a total of 12.
Sew the top and bottom of each wedge exactly as the instructions show in Tutorial 1, fold the wedge’s right sides together and sew. Again, it’s optional to use the center circle on your plate, so if using it, sew just the bottom long base, if not using it, sew both the top and bottom.
Use 1/4in seam allowance for the whole process.
The back of each wedge should look as in the picture above.
To start sewing the pairs, align a pair of two different wedges by matching the seam allowance on the two horizontal seams of the center strips. Secure the seams with a clip and sew.
Press seams open, and sew the rest of the units together to complete the plate.
Give a good press on the plate when finished and applique on the t-shirt using straight stitch or blanket stitch.
Sew along the bigger outer shape and smaller inner shape to complete the applique, if not using a center circle. If using a center circle, sew the outer edge first, and then the circle to finish the applique.
