In this second tutorial, let’s make a split-wedge pointed plate.
Materials:
To make (1) wedge (if making scrappy):
*(2) 6.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles, you’ll need (24) total to make (12) wedges.
To make (12) wedges in 2 colors:
*Color 1: (1) fat quarter (will use 10″ x width of fabric)
*Color 2: (1) fat quarter (will use 10″ x width of fabric)
*the LARGE Dresden wedge template
*optionally, the circle template is in the same PDF file above.
Cut (4) 2.5″ x WOF strips from each color 1 and color 2 fabrics.
Using a 1/4in seam allowance, sew (4) sets of c1 + c2 as in the picture above. Press seams open.
Align the LARGE template horizontally on the set sewn. Cut (3) wedges from each set for a total of (12) wedges.
Sew all wedges bases (top and bottom – if you’re NOT using the center circle; if you ARE using the center circle, sew ONLY the bottom – wider base). Lower the stitch length to secure the seams.
To sew, fold the right sides together and lay each seam on the wrong side towards its color as shown in the pictures above.
Use 1/4in seam allowance for the entire process.
Turn the points right side out using the tip of snipping scissors (be careful with the stitches), or a “that purple thang”, or any turning tool you have.
Press each one aligning the seams to the center of the wedge.
Sew the wedges to form the plate. The split colors are always going to be c1+c2+c1+c2 and so on.
When finished sewing the plate, press and applique. Use straight stitch or blanket stitch.
Sew along the bigger outer shape and smaller inner shape to complete the applique, if not using a center circle. If using a center circle, sew the outer edge first, and then the circle to finish the applique.
