In this tutorial, you will learn how to make a simple zipper closure for a throw pillow style using french seams. This tutorial includes a FREE block pattern.
I am so happy to welcome you to my first tutorial of 2023!!! This tutorial is for all of you, especially for those participating in the 2nd Annual Quilted Pillowcase Swap that I am hosting this year for the second time.
The sign-up is already closed, and we’re currently in the second week of the swap. This tutorial will provide you with a FREE PDF pattern of the Hollow Cube block, that you can use for making a 16″ square throw-size pillowcase, a quilt, or a mini quilt!!
For the step-by-step on how to make the block, please download the pattern HERE.

The zipper closure and french seams
There are a couple of different ways of sewing a zipper on the back of a pillowcase for a smooth and complete closure. In this tutorial I will show you the easiest way (in my opinion), that doesn’t require previous experience sewing zippers.
In addition to a nice closure method to work on your pillow, I am also going to show you how you can easily finish the inner seams of the pillow using french seams.
After quilting and trimming the block to 16.5″ square, cut the back fabric of your pillowcase (considering a 16″ square pillow in this tutorial) into a rectangle measuring 16.5″ x 17.5″.
Fold one of the shorter sides twice (16.5″ side) and sew to finish the edge. This finished edge is where the zipper will be attached.
Now, with a simple straight seam, lay one edge of the zipper (16″ long zipper) with its teeth facing up under the finished edge and sew as close to the zipper as you can. When finished, it will look like the picture above.
Trim any excess fabric on the sides, and clip or pin the back part to the quilted pillow part, with the outer sides facing out and inner sides together.
Sew all along the four sides using a 1/8″ seam allowance.
Open the zipper and turn the pillow inner side out. Press the entire project. Clip it in place so the fabric doesn’t slide, and sew all along the sides using a 1/4″ seam allowance to create a french seam.
Be careful with the zipper side as a 1/4″ seam allowance might get close to the zipper teeth and metal end. I suggest using a pin to hold it in place in this step.
Sew slowly and steadily, and pivot right after the metal part to keep going on the next side.
Turn the pillowcase right side out and press the entire pillowcase. Be careful pressing the fabric close to the zipper.
The pillowcase is now finished and ready for the pillow insert!!!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
