Welcome to this FREE tutorial with Michael Miller Fabrics 2022 Blog Hop!!!
For this tutorial, I used the Halloween on Broome Street collection for the top and binding, and I used the Marble collection, fabric CX1087-AMET-D for the backing.
When I think about Halloween, I imagine fun games and lots of treats!!! So today I created a fun fabric memory game for you to make and add to the kids’ treat bags this year!!! Perfect combination, right?
So let’s get started.
Initial instructions:
*Drawstring bag pattern: purchase it on my Etsy shop.
*Fabric mat: 27″x17″ finished
*Fabric cards: 3 1/2″ finished (each card).
*WOF means width of fabric.
*Assume 42″ WOF.
Fabric mat instructions:
*1/2yd – side A;
*1/2yd – side B;
For each side cut (1) 27 1/4″ x 17 1/4″ rectangle.
***Batting is optional.
With the fabrics’ right sides together, sew along the entire rectangle leaving a 4″ opening to turn the project right side out. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to reinforce.
Clip all four corners diagonally and turn the project inside out. Press and topstitch all along the edge.
Fabric card instructions:
*3/4yd of ‘the neighborhood‘ Michael Miller Fabrics Halloween fabric or 1/4yd for the main fabric. Fussy cut (9) 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ pairs (***check observation) from ‘the neighborhood’ prints, or sub-cut (9) 3 1/2 ” x 3 1/2″ pairs from the fabric chosen.
***Each print on ‘the neighborhood’ fabric is a 3″ square. To cut 9 pairs and leave seam allowance in order to keep the main 3″ print intact, open the fabric completely, press, and start from the first row where the full square with the edge can be cut. Cut out all squares possible for each row – 2 of each different print – the fabric has 9 different prints, you will cut 18 squares total.
This is 1yd pictured. You’ll only need 3/4yd.
*1/4yd for the backing fabric. Cut (2) 3 1/2″ x WOF strips; sub-cut (18) 3 1/2″ squares.
*20″x9″ batting piece (or scrap batting). Cut (3) 3″ x 20″ strips; sub-cut (18) 3″ squares.
If using fusible interfacing or fusible batting, fuse the main fabric on each square (batting is cut smaller to reduce bulk).
Sewing the fabric cards:
After fusing all cards, with the fabrics’ right sides together, sew along the entire square using 1/4″ seam allowance and leave a 2″ opening to turn the project right side out.
Sew all backing fabric as previously explained and trim all four corners on each card before turning them right side out.
Turn each one right side out and fold the opening edge 1/4″ inside on both sides and press. Hold with a wonder clip. Topstitch all cards to finish.
Press all cards after finishing to set the seam and make sure they’re all flat and the openings are closed.
Tips and suggestions:
To keep the game fun as in a regular memory game, choose the backing fabric with a consistent print, so it’s not easy to identify or memorize what card matches one another.
The mat is optional, but it’s a good idea to add it to the set as it can be placed anywhere and keep the cards all together in one place while playing. For the mat’s fabrics, choosing contrasting colors in comparison to the cards’ backing fabric will make a difference when playing, as it’ll be easier to see the cards on the mat, so they don’t blend in.
Also, the mat is reversible, so keep the contrasting color choices for both sides.
