Needle books are fun to make, great to gift and there are infinite ways of using your creativity to add your special touch to these!!
For one 11inx5.5in needle book, you will need:
*(16) 1in hexagons basted and sewn according to the pattern available HERE (if you don’t know how to baste and sew hexagons refer to my EPP for Beginners Tutorial HERE);
*(1) 6in x 12″ and (2) 3.5in x 6.5in pieces of felt;
*(2) pairs of snap buttons (Cap+Socket (front) and Cap+Stud (back));
*Snap plier and awl (generally comes in the set);
*Sewing machine and thread;
Quick EPP project
This project offers some cool possibilities to make different combinations of fabrics and layouts. I made 2 for the tutorial exclusively to show more than one example of how to play with your hexies!!
Once you’ve decided on which layout to go with, follow the graphics and hand-sew your hexagons together.
Remove your papers from the back and press.
Place the finished EPP project on the 6inx12in piece of felt and sew all around on the sewing machine
(or, if preferred, by hand). Quilt as desired, I simply like sewing all around the hexies.
I used Mettler Poly Glow col.1260 No.40 and it is amazing!!!
Look how fun this is 😀
Next, cut the felt excess and leave 1/8in bigger all around to create a binding effect.
To make the needle book pages, use the (2) felt pieces measuring 3.5inx6.5in, sew all around each one with 1/4in seam allowance, and to make it fun cut the edges once it’s sewn using pinking shears.
We’re almost done!
Align both of the sheets on the center of the cover, with the felt side facing up, and sew in the middle to create the pages, in this part, you can use a decorative stitch to create a fun effect on the sides when you close the book or just straight stitching like I did.
Finally, to be able to close our needle book we will use plastic snap buttons!!
Besides the snap plier, we will use two pairs of buttons, 1 cap + 1 socket (front = part that looks like a little bowl) and 1 cap + Stud (back = part that looks like a little hat).
To make the hole to add the cap, use the awl and punch it through both layers together, so they’ll be perfectly aligned.
On the top part of your needle book, install cap+socket. On the bottom part, install cap+stud.
Hi, I am new to paper piecing, should I use a 1.5″ paper template for this project? I have been enjoying pursuing your website. Such lovely ideas!
Hello!
This project uses 1in hexagons as per requirements in the first part of this post. If you use larger hexagons, the needle book will be bigger and the felt sheets inside will need size adjustment.
Sorry, for not understanding… this means the finished size of each hexagon is 1 inch, with 1/4 inch seam allowance folded under?
Your page showing how to paper piece is excellent. This will be my first project, wish me luck.
Thank you so much for your comment! I am happy that you’re enjoying the content!
Oh, my gosh, Daisi, these are really cute! I’ve been wondering what to do with my hexies since I’m not into making a whole quilt. I love the snaps too. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Carol!!! I am so happy that you like it!
