In this fourth tutorial, let’s make a double plate, so there will be two Dresden plates in this design.
Materials:
For these plates, I recommend using scrap fabrics! Make it fun and colorful!
***You’ll need to use both LARGE and SMALL wedges templates in the TEMPLATE PDF, AND the circle.
For the LARGE template, you’ll need 6.5″ x 4.5″ fabric pieces and for the SMALL template, you’ll need 3 1/4″ x 2 3/4″ fabric pieces.
For both Dresden plates, you’ll need to cut (12) wedges.
*If using fabric strips for the SMALL template cut:
(2) 3 1/4″ x 12″ strip of a fat quarter, or (1) 3 1/4″ x 24″ strip of yardage (42-44″)
*If using fabric strips for the LARGE template cut:
(2) 6 1/2″ x WOF strip of a fat quarter (21″), or (1) 6 1/2″ x WOF strip of yardage (42-44″)
***the circle template will be used ONLY to cut the excess in the center of the large Dresden plate.
First, make the SMALL Dresden plate exactly as shown in TUTORIAL 1. Sew BOTH bases on the wedges to create the points on both sides as in the picture above.
Sew the LARGE wedges only on the wider base as the smaller base will be trimmed and hidden under the small Dresden plate.
Use the circle template to trace around the center hole of the LARGE Dresden plate.
Next, cut out the excess center part of the LARGE Dresden plate. I recommend using an 18mm rotary cutter.
Now the Dresden plates are ready to be sewn.
To applique the plates, first sew the LARGE Dresden plate, using a straight stitch or blanket stitch. Then, align the SMALL Dresden on top at the center of the LARGE Dresden plate and sew both on the outer and inner edges.
