Hello everyone, I am very happy to share my new pattern called Baby Shine. This is a baby quilt size only and it includes a BONUS baby pillow pattern. This project was made using the Lights On collection by Assorted Designers for Riley Blake Designs along with a pop of fun colors from Melissa Mortenson for Riley Blake Designs.
Designing mini and baby quilts is my favorite, when I saw the Lights On collection for the first time I knew it would be so cute to use it for a baby project.
Of course, if you know me, I always love to add lots of colors to my projects, but also love the simple designs and delicate prints. Lights On is one of my current favorite types of background for quilts, which are low-volume, tone-on-tone fabrics.
I wanted to make a project that could be easily adaptable to using different fabrics, scraps, background colors, etc, that would give you more freedom to play with prints and colors. What would be more fitting than a star quilt with lots of negative space, right? I made sure to balance the background and star, adding a mix of full squares, half-square-triangles, and hourglass blocks to be able to bring this baby quilt pattern to life with a ton of fun combination possibilities.
And guess what?
I try to always focus on reducing fabric waste, so the remaining hourglass blocks not used in the quilt became a BONUS baby pillow pattern included in this project!
Lights On has many different prints that can be spread through the background blocks and square placement to make an even and harmonious mix of prints.
This quilt uses only a 1/4 yard from 8 different prints for the background, or you can go scrappy and make it even more mixed.
For the star fabrics, the sparkles in the Sparkler collection completed the glow I was looking to reach. With 8 different colors, I was able to create HSTs and hourglass blocks that turned a simple pattern into a fancy design that will brighten any baby nursery.
When using low-volume fabrics, or white-on-white as Lights On, I like quilting with either white or an off-white thread color (on this quilt I used Mettler thread POLY SHEEN 100% polyester 0010 Silky White). I used my walking foot to create a modern straight quilting called “diamonds in diamonds” from WALK 2.0 by Jacquie Gering.
For the quilt that finishes in 43in x 43in, I used an interval of 3 inches apart for a larger diamond design.
For the baby pillow, which finishes at 14in x 14in, I used the same quilting design with an interval of 1 1/2 inch for a small diamond design.

Cute pattern and fabrics, Daisi! I really like your quilting design too–I’ve just used it in a panel I’m working on. 🙂
